Learn modern oil portraiture with botanical & animal elements
Over three relaxed sessions, you’ll move from a simple traced drawing to a rich, modern oil painting. You’ll learn easy colour mixing techniques, light and shadow, and how to paint flowers, animals, and a lifelike face with soft, natural skin tones. By the end, you’ll have a finished, expressive piece with a contemporary feel and your own creative flair.
During the sessions, you’ll enjoy delicious canapés and a lovely high tea while chatting with others who love art. Whether you’re picking up a brush for the first time in years or building on existing skills, this course is about enjoyment, confidence, and giving yourself space to be creative.
Course Outline
Technique:
- Day 1 – Getting Started
Choose your reference photo and transfer it to the canvas, so drawing stays simple. You’ll set up an easy, versatile palette, learn the basics of oils, try a coloured underpainting, and block in the darkest areas to build a strong base. - Day 2 – Color & Layers
We’ll strengthen light and shadow and mix natural colours for flowers, leaves, and animals. You’ll see how to get a rich, finished look with just one or two layers of paint—without overworking your piece. - Day 3 – Portrait & Finishing
The last day focuses on the face. You’ll mix soft, natural skin tones and paint the eyes, nose, and mouth step by step, then refine the rest of the portrait. Finally, you’ll add a simple, expressive background to complete your contemporary painting.
