Dance by Henri Matisse
Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French artist, known both, for his use of colour, and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. Dance (La Danse) is a painting made by him in 1910 which shows five dancing figures, painted in a strong red, set against a very simplified landscape. The composition of the dancing figures is commonly recognized as “a key point of (Matisse’s) career and in the development of modern painting”. The performance of Isadora Duncan served as a source of inspiration for the painting.
